Trans 101 for Employeers

In the last few years, you may have heard more about the transgender community than ever before. As transgender people gain more visibility and acceptance, it is important to ask: would your company be prepared if a transgender person applied for a job or if one of your employees informed you that they were transitioning? This program will (1) introduce you to the basic terminology necessary to understand the transgender community, (2) discuss the current state of the law as it pertains to transgender employees, and (3) identify best practices for ensuring that your company provides a safe and welcoming environment for transgender employees.

PRESENTER:

Nathan Arrowsmith focuses his practice on transgender legal issues, commercial litigation, appellate matters, commercial landlord/tenant issues, government and regulatory law, ethics and professional responsibility and education law.

Best Practices for Corporate Political Involvement

2018 has been a contentious, and expensive, election year, and 2020 will likely be even more so. Corporations are a key fundraising target, whether for ambitious ballot measures or candidates in hard-fought federal or state elections. But corporate political activity comes with risks, from legal liability to public relations woes. This session will provide practical tips on how to navigate the risks associated with corporate involvement in elections. Drawing on the lessons of the 2018 election just passed, we will talk about the common ways in which corporations are asked to become involved, traps for the unwary, and tips about how to minimize risks through internal compliance procedures.

Mary O'Grady's practice focuses on appeals, civil litigation and administrative law. Mary's areas of expertis include election and campaign finance law, the Voting Rights Act, State constitutional law, government contracts, state legislation, open meeting and public records laws, redistricting and school finance.
